The South Dakota Hall of Fame extends our condolences to the family and friends of 1989 Inductee Paul Christen, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025. We remember and honor the life of Paul Christen, a remarkable philanthropist, visionary business leader, and steadfast champion of South Dakota’s progress. His enduring contributions to education, industry, and community service leave a legacy that will continue to shape the state for generations to come.
A devoted supporter of Dakota Wesleyan University, Paul played a vital role in helping fund the creation of the university’s Wellness Center—an investment in the health and future of students that exemplified his commitment to uplifting others.
Throughout his life, Paul was deeply engaged in local, state, and regional development efforts. His leadership in industrial growth and financing initiatives helped drive economic momentum across South Dakota. He notably served as Vice Chairman of MEI Corp. during a period when the company was recognized among Fortune Magazine’s 500 largest industrial firms, ranked at 272.
Paul’s passion extended beyond business. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was proud to be a part-owner of the Minnesota Twins, cheering on his team with the same enthusiasm he brought to every endeavor.
Civic service was a cornerstone of Paul’s life. He gave generously of his time and energy, serving on a wide array of boards, including the South Dakota Kiwanis Club, South Dakota Chamber of Commerce, Greater Huron Development Corporation, the Industry & Commerce Association of South Dakota, and the Board of Trustees at Dakota Wesleyan University. His dedication to these organizations, and many others, reflected a belief in building stronger communities through collaboration and purpose.
Paul Christen’s life was marked by vision, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his home state. His memory lives on in the institutions he supported, the lives he touched, and the values he embodied.
