Rapid City lawmaker, philanthropist Stan Adelstein dead at 94

Adelstein was a Republican lawmaker from District 32, a purple district that houses wide-ranging political views from the business-oriented downtown Rapid City to the affluent West Boulevard district, up to the culturally diverse North Rapid neighborhood.

Tom Katus, a Democrat elected to the same district between Adelstein’s two terms in the Senate, said he represented this range of people with care, and wasn’t afraid of hearing views from across the aisle or between cultures. He added despite their political differences, the two were close.

“He would attend my briefing sessions and cracker barrels routinely and was complimentary throughout," Katus said. "I was pretty impressed that he always reached across the aisle, and while being a proud Republican, he always reached out to Democrats as well.”

Katus said he admired Adelstein’s respect for the fourth estate over his political career.
