Elmer Karl leaves behind 70-year legacy rooted in Gregory

Elmer Karl, 94, died July 15 in Gregory, the community where he started the business that would become a familiar name throughout the region.

Karl’s TV and Appliance announced his passing on social media, remembering him as a mentor, leader and friend who embodied the company’s small-town values.

“(Elmer) was humble, devoted and a great mentor,” Karl’s TV and Appliance CEO Chuck Bergen said in the company’s statement.

Karl grew up on a farm near Gregory, attending a one-room school before graduating from Gregory High School. After spending two years working on the family farm, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War, where he received electronics training.
